Ron has, in his words “been a rockhound all my life”. He has been picking agates at the Coast since he was a child & he used to visit with his family. While plying his trade as a pattern-maker for Pendleton Woolen Mills, he joined the Clackamette Mineral & Gem Club in Oregon City. He attended lapidary classes for making cabochons, lamps, & tables...all from rock.
Around that same time, he was introduced to Twist Craft, a method of creating bezels from wire…allowing any size or shape of stone to be set without having casting done.
He was hooked.
An avid skin-diver, scuba-diver, & spear-fisherman, Ron is also an entrepreneur, creating & manufacturing his own line of wetsuits…the SeaLion Suit, in 1979,…retiring from that business in 2003.
He & his wife, after spending significant time here, relocated to the Oregon Coast, permanently, in 1993. He then joined North Lincoln Agate Club, where he remained a member until 2014.
From the seeds of skills learned in Twist Craft, Ron taught himself a very elegant, almost architectural, style of wire-wrapping. His silver & gold wire-wrapped pieces sell from around $65-$300, depending on the stone, the type of wire & the details used in creating the piece.
Having mastered the art & craft of wire-wrapping, however, Ron says that “anyone can put their own twist on it”.
He loves what he does (you can tell!) and plans to share his skillful adaptation of this craft, as well as his hard-won techniques, at the Wrap It Up Class, which will be taught on Saturday 4/29/2017, from 5-7 pm at Beluga Beads.
Class size is extremely limited, so that individual instruction may be given. Cost for the class is $65 per person, and each person will leave with a pendant, created by their own hand. Kits, including the wire & the cabochons will be available at Beluga Beads for an additional fee. Tools will also be available for rent or for purchase, or students may bring their own.
